The Indonesian Tsunami

The East Kent Scouts collected in Deal High Street on behalf of the Disasters Emergency Committee. Save the Children is one of the 14 charities that comprise that committee and work together in the wake of a disaster.  The people of Deal were incredibly generous and a total of £289 was raised for people whose lives have been devastated by the Indonesia disaster.

Save the Children has worked in Indonesia for over 40 years. In a matter of moments, children in Indonesia saw their homes, schools and even their loved ones swept away by the tsunami. At least 1500 people have been killed. Children have suffered an incredibly distressing event. Despite extreme challenges in gaining access, the charity was on the ground within 72 hours of the disaster striking. Children’s lives are still at risk as disease is spreading because people are forced to use contaminated water. Survivors are dependent on water  trucks, but the system is under strain because  water pipes were shattered by the earthquake and many people lack suitable water containers. Just £50 can buy a pump so a whole village can access clean drinking water. To support the appeal please visit http://www.savethechildren.org.uk or telephone 020 7012 6400.

Save the Children Christmas Jumper Day.

The Rock Choir

On 15th December, the Rock Choir with conductor Johnathon Grosberg sang carols and popular hits whilst the scouts collected in the High Street. £430 was raised for Save the Children on what was one of the coldest days of the year!  Local group Deal Savoyards followed on from the Rock Choir singing seasonal carols.  Heartfelt thanks to the scouts and both choirs for braving the cold on this bitter day!

The Scouts

Save the Children is so grateful for the support of the Scouts for their willingness to take on the challenge of collecting in the High Street for several hours on an incredibly cold day.
